The church continually cries out for the Wisdom of God. We’re promised it in James 1:5 that if we ask Him, He will give liberally and without reproach. But often times when the Wisdom comes, it comes in an “unacceptable” package … Rebuke.
Here we see Wisdom from God (personified as a woman) crying in the streets for any who will listen.
Wisdom calls aloud outside; She raises her voice in the open squares. She cries out in the chief concourses, at the openings of the gates in the city She speaks her words: How long, you simple ones, will you love simplicity? For scorners delight in their scorning and fools hate knowledge.
Wisdom offers her words freely in the form of knowledge, she makes a promise:
Turn at my rebuke; SURELY I will pour out my spirit on you; I will make my words known to you.
Wisdom wants to pour out the Spirit of God on us, but there is a prerequisite; we must TURN at Her rebuke. We must understand the order of things here. We must FIRST turn at the rebuke of Wisdom, and THEN we understand her Words. Those who claim to be wise but will not receive rebuke are simple and know nothing, regardless of the degree they have or the title they hold.
Because I have called and you refused, I have stretched out my hand and no one regarded. Because you disdained all my counsel, and would have none of my rebuke, I also will laugh at your calamity; I will mock when your terror comes, when your terror comes like a storm and your destruction comes like a whirlwind, when distress and anguish come upon you.
Can anything from God mock you when something bad happens? Apparently so! When we continue in our hard-hearted ways … not listening to the counsel and the rebuke offered to us by Wisdom — the Bible says that very same Wisdom (that comes from God) mocks us in our distress.
Then they will call on me, but I will not answer. They will seek me diligently, but they will not find me. Because they hated knowledge and did not choose the Fear of the LORD, they would have none of my counsel and despised my every rebuke.
Here we see Wisdom actually hiding and making Herself unavailable to us when we call! Have you ever felt that lost? I definitely have, and it’s because of this:
Therefore they shall eat the fruit of their own way, and be filled to the full with their own fancies.
I got exactly what I deserve, because I didn’t listen in the first place. It’s really the law of sowing and reaping. If you’re going to sow to your flesh, you WILL reap corruption. But if you so to the Spirit, you get Life!
For the turning away of the simple will slay them, and the complacency of fools will destroy them; but whoever listens to me will dwell safely, and will be secure, without fear of evil.
Receiving Rebuke in the Modern Days
It’s so important in these Last Days to receive rebuke. Our modern-day North American church has no concept of this. No one dares to rebuke his brother or sister of blatant wrong for fear of being labelled as “judgement”, but (according to Proverb 1:23) receiving rebuke is a key component to receiving the outpouring of God’s Spirit!
Receiving rebuking involves crucifying the flesh, mostly because it comes through imperfect people! Obviously, there are people out there who have a “God complex” and feel they just need to rebuke everybody, but there are people who God has put in our lives who care for us very much, and we need to listen to their rebuke, no matter how painful it is to our flesh. Men, this includes your wives! Ladies, this includes your husbands!
Small note: If you can find something wrong with EVERYONE who rebukes you, you can’t use that as an excuse. There is a good chance that YOU are the problem!
The bottom line is this: If you ever hope to receive the outpouring of God’s Spirit, or receive His Wisdom in any form, you must … MUST … be able to receive rebuke from those God has surrounded you with. Only then will you be equipped to fulfill your part in His Kingdom as it is on earth.
