Listen to the Podcast!
In the last post, I discussed the events that the prophetic elite allowed us to know between the years 2004 and 2019.
If you took an unbiased look at the evidence, it should have been more than enough to prove that something crafty is afoot in the prophetic movement.
But two post-mortem videos released by Rick Joyner, Founder and Executive Director of Morningstar Ministries (not to mention, proud Knights of Malta member) should erase any lingering doubt as to the truth about this situation.
As you watch these videos that I am going to discuss, you have to consider the possible motive Rick had in creating them.
Either: (a) he is genuinely heartbroken over the situation and trying to make sense of everything that went on with the Paul Cain debacle; or (b) he is a willing accomplice who is trying to protect his own reputation and ministry.
Based upon the evidence in these videos, I think it’s an odd combination of the two, leaning heavily toward the “willing accomplice” side of things.
In this post, I’m going to be saying some very harsh things and subjecting various points to some harsh scrutiny.
This is not just a malicious assumption.
This is not “Kevin trying to find the worst in people and rub it in.”
These are direct quotes . . . actual testimony . . . coming from Rick Joyner himself as he reveals the truth about the Paul Cain embarrassment.
As I go through this, you’ll find that even in revealing the truth about Paul Cain, Rick Joyner attempts to throw in little seeds of manipulation and deception for the purpose of:
- maintaining Paul’s position as a prophet;
- sustaining the prophetic movement ideology;
- and covering his own backside in the process.
Now, if Rick Joyner is not willfully deceiving, he still speaks from a certain deceptive “frame of reference.” To Rick and those of the prophetic movement, it is a foregone conclusion that:
- Paul was anointed by God with the gift of prophecy and ministered in His name;
- Paul was a “father” of the prophetic movement;
- Paul was mostly a good person and “doesn’t care what we think about him,” now that he is with the Father.
People who buy into these conclusions and the ideology that accompanies them cannot and will not see it any other way and, as a result, will not accept an alternative unless God steps in and opens their eyes.
In a quote from the second video, when speaking of how vile the Paul Cain situation actually is, Rick Joyner says:
“And I was blind to all this. Why? Because I refused to let my mind go somewhere, even though the signs were so blatant . . . so in your face . . . it was like I could not let my mind go there . . . no, that’s not possible; I’m not going to see that.” – Rick Joyner
At best, this is an admitted, willful denial of the truth.
It’s a pity that he (and the other prophetic faithful) cannot see and apply this hindsight to their current perception of the Word of God regarding prophets and prophecy.
Hopefully, this information will light a fire under some and inspire them to dig deep into what God says about these topics instead of blindly following what feels good for a season.
For the rest of this series, while discussing the Paul Cain fiasco in depth, I will also be exposing the pitfalls of Rick’s (and by extension the prophetic movement’s) “frame of reference.”
So let’s learn the truth, shall we?
What We Were Not Told About the Paul Cain Breakdown
Paul Cain died on February 12, 2019.
Not a week later (February 18, 2019), Rick Joyner released a video commenting on the situation.
Initially, Rick gives Paul Cain a glowing report, informing us of his love and respect for him as a prophet – a father – with a “supernatural sense of humor” and an amazing prophetic gift. But then he gets down to the nitty-gritty and reveals what we were not allowed to know for 15 years.
Before reading on, PLEASE take the time to check out the video, if you haven’t already. I am not making assumptions. These are direct quotes.
According to Rick Joyner himself, Paul Cain was a practicing homosexual “right up until the last couple months” (5:45)
We were told that Paul “struggled” with this sin, but the truth of the matter is he was a predator who regularly became “out of control” (4:05), especially when he drank alcohol and was considered “threatening, especially to young men.” (3:25)
In fact, Rick says that they had to kick Paul out of their hotel because of “some things” that he did. What those “things” were is anybody’s guess, but think of what it takes for a respected “prophet” to get kicked out of one of your partner’s hotels.
As if that weren’t enough, Rick said that they had to “put watches” on Paul’s room (8:20).
Why would you “put watches” on someone’s room unless you had to protect someone else from harm?
Look, if you are putting “watches” on people’s rooms because they have become so predatory that you feel the need to protect others, and then you turn around and promote them as a “prophet of God,” your issues are just as bad as the predator’s.
I mean, just think about this.
Paul Cain . . . the highly revered “prophet of God” . . . a “father” in the prophetic movement had to have someone watch over him because of his threatening obsession with young men.
- This was allowed to happen under your watch, Rick Joyner, and you still let him “minister”?
- This was allowed to happen under your watch, other “prophets of God,” and you still promoted Paul Cain and let him minister in your pulpits?
- This was allowed to happen, David Andrade and other members of Paul’s “restoration team,” and you still presented him as “restored?”
If it were anyone else . . . anyone without a big name and a public ministry . . . they would be called an “accomplice” to Paul’s vile behavior.
And you got away with it for 15 years.
Paul Cain was “very aggressive” when confronted.
The implications of this extra information would shatter any other ministry overnight, but Morningstar, IHOP and the other affiliated ministries survive.
They were well aware of what was going on with their “beloved father.”
The truth of the matter is, when Rick Joyner, Jack Deere and Mike Bickle initially confronted Paul Cain (in 2004) about his homosexuality and alcoholism, he not only denied it, but he became “very aggressive” (3:20) and we were told nothing about it.
Instead, we were told that Paul “struggled.” Please.
Even “years after” the 2004 confrontation – right up until a few months ago (5:40) there were reports coming in about Paul Cain’s problems with homosexuality, and we were told nothing.
- This means that Paul Cain was a sodomite when he was considered “restored.”
- This means that Paul Cain was a sodomite when he said that he led a “celibate life.” (6:15)
- This means that Paul Cain was a sodomite when he laid hands on Todd Bentley and “blessed” him.
- This means that Paul Cain was a sodomite all the while being lauded as a “prophet of God”
- This means that Charisma magazine, The Elijah List and other charismatic publications promoted a sodomite as a “prophet of God” and wanted YOU to promote a sodomite as a “prophet of God.”
Paul’s homosexuality was a part of his life and – like it or not – a part of his ministry “right up until the last couple months.” (5:40)
And those who really knew him knew that he was “threatening, especially to young men.”
Even from my own very limited experience with Paul, I noticed that whenever he came to Oregon (where I live) and whenever I saw him online, his assistants were always young men who were . . . let’s just say, “less-than-masculine.”
Come on, people. Put two and two together.
Rick Joyner Attempts to Save Face
One can easily see, as Rick is revealing this previously unknown information about Paul, that he is grasping at anything to make sure that he and Morningstar are viewed in a positive light.
The reports about Paul Cain’s behavior are so numerous . . . so prevalent . . . that the severity and frequency of the matter can no longer be hidden and there are some who are wising up to the situation.
For there is nothing covered that will not be revealed, nor hidden that will not be known.
Rick Joyner is quick to assure us that “sinful, immoral behavior” (8:30) especially among leadership and those with a powerful gifting is . . . “not acceptable in the Body of Christ” (9:10)
Rick reminds us that he was the one who confronted Paul on his claim to have lived a “celibate life,” and that, even to the present day, he would not cave to public opinion and consider Paul “restored” because he did not see any fruit of repentance.
He reminds us that they (Rick Joyner, Jack Deere and Mike Bickle) were the ones who confronted a “very aggressive” (3:20) Paul Cain on his issues and threatened to go public if he did not submit to a restoration process.
But when they went public, they left out most of the details that Rick Joyner talks about in these videos.
- Why did they not give us any information about Paul’s predatory tendencies?
- Why did they not tell us that Paul was still “struggling” with homosexuality?
Instead, the public received a watered-down version of the truth, leading the listener to believe that “their fallen hero had just become too weak to go on with the battle and he struggled under the weight of this relentless attack of the enemy, because of his gifts.”
But the truth of the matter was that this man was out of control and reports from victims were becoming so abundant that Rick and company knew they would have to come up with some sort of spin on the story so that they and their respective ministries would come out on top when the dust settled.
And so we have the narrative from 2004.
- Nevermind that Paul was aggressive when confronted.
- Nevermind that Rick Joyner, Jack Deere and Mike Bickle knew that he was “threatening, especially to young men”.
- Nevermind that he was so out of control that they had to put watches on his room.
- Nevermind that Paul blatantly lied about living a celibate life and lied about submitting to a valid restoration process.
- Nevermind that Paul felt his “giftings” were an endorsement from YHWH and placed him “above the law”, as it were.
- Nevermind that Paul was a predator.
From 2004 onward, you were to believe that Paul was a “fallen hero” who “struggled” with homosexuality and alcoholism.
And the Spin Continues . . .
To further distance himself from Paul Cain and his abominations, Rick Joyner tells of an experience that he had from YHWH in 2004, where he was allegedly “caught up” and saw “the anger of the Lord” with Paul’s sins. This was allegedly instrumental in Rick’s motivation for exposing Paul.
This is where I have to call “Baloney Sandwich” on Rick Joyner. He’s definitely using this claim to distance himself from the conflict, validating himself and his ministry in the eyes of the listener.
If you have a “caught up” experience, it should be coupled with such an awe and reverence of God that you’re going to tell the whole truth and nothing but the truth . . . and this simply did not happen.
- Why wait for 15 years to tell us of these details?
- Why were we not told of this “caught up” experience in 2004?
- Why were we not told about Paul’s predator-like demeanor in 2004?
It’s simple. People were trying to cover their backsides.
Remember, it took Rick Joyner less than a week after Paul’s death to create this video. If you ask me, that’s pretty quick.
But there’s a strategy involved here, folks.
Because, according to Rick, the stories are so plentiful and the truth about the situation is unavoidable, Rick wants to prepare you to look at the situation in (what he calls in the next video) “a redemptive way.”
This is a common strategy in the media and the political arena. When a disaster is unavoidable, you address it “humbly” ahead of time and spin it in your favor so that the public will perceive the situation according to your terms when the hammer falls.
And this is exactly what is happening here.
Rick’s association with Paul is so condemning that he made this video (and the next) to lay a foundation from which he can build.
And quite honestly, he has an easy job ahead of him because the lemmings in the prophetic movement will swallow anything he feeds them. I’ve commented extensively on this before, so it’s pretty redundant for me to say much more regarding the gullibility of the prophetic faithful.
I can, however, point out some cracks in the foundation he has already laid down.
Taken individually, these may seem like very small “cracks” that are up for debate, but when they are combined, they form large sections of the very unstable foundation that the prophetic movement’s ethos is built upon.
There Are Worse Sins Than Others
Towards the beginning of the video, when addressing Paul Cain’s deviant lifestyle, Rick said, “to me, it’s not whether it’s homosexual or anything, it’s whether it’s immoral or not.” (2:48)
I’m going to give Rick Joyner the benefit of the doubt and ignore the possibility that he is trying to appear “politically correct” to his increasingly sensitive and offendable audience.
Rick’s statement is based upon the inaccurate belief that all sin is the same in the eyes of God, so homosexuality is just as bad as any other kind of immorality.
But if you read the Bible, it is easy to see that there is a difference in God’s perception of various sins.
- Some sins are just wrong and are penalized by making a restitution.
- Others will make you unclean and result in having to be purified.
- And still others, like homosexuality, are considered an “abomination” and are so bad, YHWH decreed “death” for those who would commit such a violation.
An “abomination” is so vile – so offensive to the senses – that you will literally run to get away from it.
I liken it to someone bringing human feces to you with their bare hands.
The presence of the feces is so repugnant – so completely nasty – that you will not hesitate to put as much distance between you and the feces as possible.
What’s more, you would be so astonished and offended that the person who brought you the feces would even think that it would be acceptable and tolerable in your sight that you would never want to be around them again. They’ve completely stepped over the line.
It’s the same with homosexuality.
I’m not saying that one cannot repent of this sin and find forgiveness. What I’m saying is that if one wants to become part of the Kingdom, that behavior can no longer be a part of who they are. It is just that vile to the Father.
If a man lies with a male as he lies with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination. They shall surely be put to death. Their blood shall be upon them.
Remember, this is not my doctrine, this is what the Word of God says.
And I’m not advocating that we should go out and kill homosexuals. God’s stance against homosexuality and their exclusion from the Kingdom is both an “Old” and “New” Testament principle.
Do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived. Neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor homosexuals, nor sodomites, nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners will inherit the kingdom of God.
The reason none of these penalties are enforced now in Western culture is because we do not have a system of judges (beit din) in place nor do we live in the actual Kingdom of God yet. But rest assured, that standard will be applied one day.
Meanwhile, God does not change (Malachi 3:6). He still feels the same way about homosexuality now as He felt about it in Moses’ day.
His viewpoints on the severity of certain sins has not changed.
Of course, all sin separates us from the Father and should be avoided at all costs, but Jesus dying on the cross did not “reset” the sin spectrum.
Paul Cain was guilty of purposefully and repetitively commiting “abomination-level” offenses.
Through assuring us that “it’s not whether it’s homosexual or anything, it’s whether it’s immoral or not,” Rick Joyner is attempting to soften your view regarding this sin ahead of time so that you will think that anal sex is on the same level as saying a naughty word when you stub your toe.
But God would disagree.
The “Gift” is Not a Validation
Throughout this video and the next, Rick Joyner constantly refers to Paul Cain’s “spiritual gifting” and how God used Paul to do all these things. He stresses Paul’s accuracy and all the “movements” and “positioning” that occurred during Paul’s time on earth.
What Rick doesn’t seem to understand is that “spiritual giftings,” no matter how accurate or impactful, are not a sign of God’s favor or His good will.
When the prophets of Asherah stood before King Jehoshaphat and King Ahab, they prophesied in the name of YHWH and were fully convinced that they were doing this with YHWH’s favor and goodwill.
They were positive and encouraging as they stood before royalty, saying “Go up to Ramoth Gilead and prosper, for the LORD will deliver it into the king’s hand.” (2 Chronicles 18:11b)
Yes, God had given them that gift, but it was a “lying spirit” (2 Chronicles 18:22) that was given to them, not a voice that would truly prophesy in the Name of the Lord.
This is something that the prophets in the prophetic movement simply find unfathomable.
Even in the New Testament, we find Yeshua rejecting prophets who prophesied in His name.
Many will say to Me in that day, “Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in Your name, cast out demons in Your name, and done many wonders in Your name?”
It’s interesting that to note that 1) prophesying in Jesus’ name, 2) casting out demons and 3) (more generally) doing “many wonders” are some of the main pillars that the modern day prophets stand on for validation of their ministry.
They call it “knowing Jesus,” but once again, the Father disagrees. The Father equates “knowing Him” with obedience – not head knowledge, not a “spiritual encounter,” not a voice in the night, not a feeling that creeps up and down your spine.
But this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, says the LORD: I will put My law [torah] in their minds, and write it on their hearts; and I will be their God, and they shall be My people. No more shall every man teach his neighbor, and every man his brother, saying, “Know the LORD,” for they all shall know Me, from the least of them to the greatest of them, says the LORD. For I will forgive their iniquity, and their sin I will remember no more.
I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit within you; I will take the heart of stone out of your flesh and give you a heart of flesh. I will put My Spirit within you and cause you to walk in My statutes, and you will keep My judgments and do them.
Yeshua tells those prophets who 1) prophesied “in Jesus name,” 2) cast out demons “in Jesus name,” and 3) did “many wonders” “in Jesus name:”
I never knew you; depart from Me, you who practice lawlessness!
Now, I’ve caught a lot of flack for teaching that “lawlessness” means “torahless-ness,” and I still believe it does, but even according to mainstream Christianity, preying upon young men has to qualify as “lawlessness,” right?
Or have you even sunk so far as to excuse that?
Samson did not die a hero.
In the video, Rick Joyner makes another attempt to salvage Paul Cain’s reputation by likening him to Samson who, according to Rick, had problems but was still used by God.
The story of Samson was not to commemorate him as a mighty warrior for God.
While the text does record the victories of Samson, it largely records the sins that led to his downfall. Even the “victories” recorded were motivated, not because Samson was in close contact with the Most High and moved according to His Spirit.
You never read, “God told Samson to do such-and-such.”
Samson’s victories were because he was an angry and vengeful man who happened to be gifted by God with supernatural strength (which is not a “gift of the Spirit” btw).
Samson was supposed to be a Nazirite from the cradle to the grave.
And He said to me, “Behold, you shall conceive and bear a son. Now drink no wine or similar drink, nor eat anything unclean, for the child shall be a Nazirite to God from the womb to the day of his death.”
But throughout the entire account of his life (Judges 13-17), the focus is on how he defiled himself and his father’s house. He was not obedient to God in the slightest.
Samson rejected his destiny by choosing to live and die like a Philistine.
To a Hebrew, where you die and are buried is a very important factor in life, but Samson did not care. Even his departing words betray this.
Then Samson said, “Let me die with the Philistines!”
What’s more, Samson’s final acts were not motivated from a heart longing to further YHWH’s purposes on earth, but a heart of vengeance because the Philistines had taken his sight.
You don’t read, “Oh Father, let me take out all these Philistines out to bring honor to Your name!!”
O Lord GOD, remember me, I pray! Strengthen me, I pray, just this once, O God, that I may with one blow take vengeance on the Philistines for my two eyes!
Like Paul Cain, Samson had issues with lust that eventually led to his downfall, but he really isn’t remembered for how many Philistines he took out along the way, he was remembered because of his tryst with Delilah and how she tricked him.
Unlike Paul Cain, Samson was appointed by God in a position of authority, but he did not walk worthy of his calling.
Samson had “judged” Israel for 20 years, but he was not a righteous judge. Any “positive” outcome that resulted from Samson’s slaughters was due to the cries and repentance of Yah’s people; it had nothing to do with the righteousness of Samson.
And Samson never preyed upon young men.
I will concede that God will use anyone and anything for His purposes. But how that purpose is perceived by and affects the individual is something that must be considered here.
Was YHWH’s purpose in using Paul Cain and his “giftings” for “good” or “evil”?
I form the light, and create darkness: I make peace, and create evil: I the LORD do all these things.
The Father used the prophets who prophesied (in His Name) in front of Ahab and Jehoshaphat for His purposes.
And the LORD said, “Who will persuade Ahab to go up, that he may fall at Ramoth Gilead?”
Therefore look! The LORD has put a lying spirit in the mouth of all these prophets of yours, and the LORD has declared disaster against you.
When God puts a lying spirit in the mouths of prophets, it’s not for the purpose of “good.”
- I’m still waiting for that “stadium speech” to come true.
- I’m still waiting for that “nameless-faceless generation” to come to fruition. Anyone with a “gift” of any sort can’t wait to get into the limelight.
- And I’m still trying to figure out the logic of how a person who has preyed upon young men can truthfully say that they’ve led a celibate life.
If that’s not a lying spirit, folks, I don’t know what one is.
This is not over yet.
All of this information was gleaned from the first video that Rick Joyner released 5-6 days after Paul’s death.
Based upon information from the next video, Rick Joyner was, at this time, planning on going to Paul’s memorial service to say a few words, but such was not meant to be.
My next post will go into further analysis and commentary. Stay tuned.
