So He drove out the man; and He placed cherubim at the east of the garden of Eden, and a flaming sword which turned every way, to guard the way [H1870 – derek] to the tree of life.
When I read this passage today, the first phrase that ran through my mind is “Paradise Lost.” Since I didn’t actually read that book, I can’t tell if it’s an accurate comparison, but on the surface it seems rather appropriate.
God’s first couple, Adam and Eve, sinned and was driven from the Garden of Eden … driven from paradise … driven from the Presence of the One they love … driven from the Way to the Tree of Life.
And mankind has been looking for a Way back ever since.
The Father placed an angel to guard the Way back to the Tree of Life. Not just your rank-n-file “angel” but a huge cherubim wielding a bright, flaming sword.
It’s no coincidence that one has to pass by a Sword that’s on Fire in order connect with the Tree of Life.
The symbolism here should be evident.
Now, I’m not trying to get hyper-spiritual and I’m not under any delusion. New Jerusalem has to touch down on earth before any of us will actually get to eat the physical Fruit from the Tree of Life (Revelation 22:14). But, until then, we can study the Way back to the Tree, inching closer and closer to that Sword. The inevitable result will be the burning and shedding of our flesh as we embrace and live out the Word of the Most High.
This Sword guards a Way …. His Way. His Way was evident from the beginning and it was always vastly different from our way.
We’re going to be studying this Path back to the Tree of Life, and ironically, we’re going to be studying the Sword that guards it.
Which way will you choose? Many church-goers will automatically shout “His Way!!” but whether or not they REALLY live out this confession remains to be seen.
If the Father wills it, I’m going to be trying something new with HonorOfKings.org. Instead of the long treatises that you are used to, I’m going to be posting shorter, devotional style content. This may result in more frequent emails, but I’m wanting to give you material that is easier to digest and get through during your busy days. I’ll see how it goes.
We’re going to be studying the Father’s Way and measuring our ways against His. His Way stayed the same from Genesis to Revelation … do you really believe this?
This is going to be fun!
For the Truth,
